The Last Hunter Mr. Cranky's rating:
This is a very strange film - a Vietnam movie that was made in Italy by Italians, dubbed, but starring Americans speaking English. Director Antonio Margheriti is the culprit here and given his place in Italian exploitation cinema, it's not exactly surprising that this thing is about as realistic and interesting as a trip to an epileptic dentist. This is a very strange film - a Vietnam movie that was made in Italy by Italians, dubbed, but starring Americans speaking English. Director Antonio ("Cannibal Apocalypse") Margheriti is the culprit here and given his place in Italian exploitation cinema, it's not exactly surprising that this thing is about as realistic and interesting as a trip to an epileptic dentist. Although the film has its share of explosions (it utilized left over sets from "Apocalypse Now"), watching the characters handle their weapons has a certain circus-like atmosphere. M-16's are waved around in spastic fashion like toy pistols and grenades are tossed around like baseballs. The story follows Captain Henry Morris (David Warbeck) as he tries to infiltrate the Viet Cong and destroy and enemy radio tower that's broadcasting anti-American messages like "Americans go home." He's followed around by journalist Jane Foster (Tisa Farrow), whose main role in the plot appears to be taking her shirt off once. Actually, Morris is desensitized early in the film by the suicide of a friend and the plot connects back to this incident with a mutual acquaintance who sort of pops out of the woodwork at the end as a VC sympathizer. Whatever. It's not like this movie was ever meant to be any good anyway. It's being released on DVD more for the novelty than anything else.
Was it really that bad?
