09/29/96: The Joy Luck Club

!pang,

I'm afraid that I was only able to view the Joy Luck Club in bits and pieces but I plan to take some time out of my schedule and either see the movie or read the book.

The only scene in the film I saw fully was the bit about the young lady with the highly irritating "Let's Go Dutch On Everything" husband. It seemed to be a very well crafted work.

As far as actually seeing a scene like the one described, the closest I have ever come is, ironically enough, in a Disney film. To wit, the death of a beloved family member in everyone's favorite childhood trauma, Bambi. Still I'm not complaining. Bambi was a fine bit of education at that young age for any child, and no one ever saw that scence coming in a warm and fuzzy Disney flick. While the other classic "say Hello to Death, Kids!" film, Old Yeller, may have also been heartbreaking to many, Bambi left most theatre goers absolutely dumbfounded with shock, grief and catharsis. While I admit that perhaps I am waxing a bit too poeticly about a Disney film, it was something of a revolution for animation and the realm of children's entertainment.

The only ACTUAL child death scene I can recall is in Interview With A Vampire but the girl in question was hardly a child in that case. Also, she was fancifully incinerated, not brutally killed. Either way, the book is much better. Every one in the series after it is just a slight decline, culminating in the clunker of Menoch the Devil. Have you read Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicles? The first three books are quite interesting.

Thanks For The Comments,
