And Kurosawa ripped off at least part of an old gangster movie called "The Glass Key" which starred Alan Ladd and was based on a Dashiell Hammett novel. The part where Toshiro Mifune was being tortured in the brewery by the giant and his buddy were from "The Glass Key".
Other aspects of it--Toshiro Mifune playing a seemingly amoral hero dealing with criminals on their own terms and playing one side off against the other--seemed to be inspired by Hammett's work.
