10/02/96: Last Theory Standing. . .JJ

I have this one theory of why the movie was so bad. This what I call the time warp/ Twilight Zone theory. . .

In the begining of the movie, we see the character John Smith (played by Bruce Willis) riding down a dirt road in what appears to be a Model-T going nowhere fast. He spins a whiskey bottle on the ground to see where it might take him. **Notice that he is in a forked road, a common tool used in ALL supernatural stories** Pointing east, our hero travels to an unknown town known as Jericho in Texas. Traveling through the dusty streets, he sees a Mexican woman being dragged by Irish thugs. The Mexican woman shown here links the past Texas with the "white" Texas in the present. The time line is twisted further when John goes for a drink in the local bar. The bartender serves him up booze. He is startled by that and asks, "What about Prohibition?" THe man replies, "Not around here." This exchange gives us the impression that Prohibition has ended at this time frame, yet, the gangsters profit from bootlegging. And John seems to know how the Italians and the Irish mobs across the East are faring. This leaves the impression that John is locked in a time paradox of some kind for in the end the Irish win the town. Or maybe the gangare are stuck in it as well? Reason being, when Christopher Walken throws away his gun and says, "I don't wanna die in Texas. Chicago, maybe. . ." Yet, Hickey sacrifices freedom to die at the hands of John Smith, probably realizing the futile notion of ever escaping the time nexus.

This leaves us with various questions. Is John's memories being warped by the ever changing paradox? Or is it that John is stuck in a time warp like the airplane flight in the Twilight Zone episode? How is that so? The ending shows John leaving with the original car that he started with instead of the new car the Irish gangsters were in. This proves that his car might be a "time machine" of some sort since he tries desperately to repair it despite numerous chances to take the town bus or stealing one of his own. Is he trying to get home to his original time or escaping reality all together since he never explains what or who is is running from.

Another thing is his uncanny ability to shoot faster than all of the other gangsters. I feel that the nexus must have altered the time frame of various people so that some shoot faster and others don't.

Spooky or what? I will leave you with that, JJ. See ya next forum!
