I checked out Robert Jordon on the shelves of my local bookstore. Why haven't I read him?

Book 7 of wheel of time ARGH BOOK *7* ARGH, I've been avoiding authors like these.
So tell me, can these books stand as stories in their own right like Terry Pratchett's Discworld series or any Dick Francis book or do you need the whole set before you start, eg David Eddings, Julian May, because you will be hanging out for the second half of a story while the author has a fight with the publisher and starts a new unrelated series (I hate that).

Keep up the good work, I'll be looking out for you. Let me see, Mission Impossible the movie was totally unencumbered with plot, maybe you could do something with that. After all the TV series was usually so tight on plot, eg acting and effects attrocious but I watched it for the story...
Wasn't Boo a character in "To kill a mocking bird?"
