Look, I fully expect "Paycheck" to be utterly dreadful. John Woo has lost it as a director. "Windtalkers" was atrocious. Ben Afleck is never good in these types of "action" films ("Daredevil," "Pearl Harbor," etc.). And yeah, Dick's stories are difficult to film. Spielberg couldn't do it, Verhoven couldn't, the director of "Imposter" couldn't. Still, each of the above movies (yes, including "Imposter") had their moments. I'm not saying that these films were even decent (well, "Total Recall" was fine), but my point is that I'd take a bad Dick adaptation over a boring period piece (unless it's something like "Miss Julie").
As for "A Scanner Darkly," Kauffman writing is a good sign. I've heard that Linklater wanted to direct. One rumor even had him doing it like "Waking Life," which would be really cool. I'd be really excited to see that team work together.
