07/30/00: Imagination

Mr. Cranky's review of "Leaving Las Vegas" was about as flat and stale as a military drill. As long as society meets all his needs efficiently, he'll continue to feel savvy, but God help us if he has to adapt to any situation he'd consider scary. Cage's character was in just such a situation much too long. He didn't dare trust people who habitually extorted optimism (as camouflaging) while they lucratively degraded him. (Note his lack of interest in "quick fix" sexual relations.) When he found it impossible to escape those circumstances among sleek Americans, he finally agreed to die instead of pointlessly shooting a few of 'em. That's transcendental intelligence in my opinion. As for Elizabeth Shue's character, her similarity (or lack of it) to other characters was irrelevant. Obviously terrible things can happen to exceptionally gifted and/or good looking women. What if all movies about prostitutes described filthy savages in glitterati finery? Would that be more believable?
