Aron, you are the first man I've ever met who referred to her as plain. Admittedly, I wouldn't say she's drop-dead gorgeous, but she's better looking than a lot of actresses I could name. And due to the fact that she has hair and make-up people insuring that she looks her best, she never really has the chance to look anything less than attractive. At least, that's as far as I can tell.
As far as her popularity goes... well, I don't know that many women who call themselves Julia Roberts fans. Maybe it's just the people I know, but really, I can't recall ever hearing someone say, "I LOVE her, I can't wait to see that movie because SHE'S in it." Usually, if I see a Julia Roberts movie, it's because I am a sucker for chick flicks. It's the same with Meg Ryan. Neither she nor Julia is a spectacular actress (although neither are as spectacularly bad, either), but they can carry the roles that romantic comedies present. And since romantic comedies tend to lovingly portray kind, sweet protagonists that the audience is sure to root for-- well, it seems pretty logical that people would like Julia (or Meg, or any other chick flicky actress) more because she plays cute characters than anything else.
-- But that's just my two cents --
