Jet Li played Wong Fei-Hong in five movies in the mid- nineties, about the same time Chan's film was made. Jet Li's portrayal was far better. Chan plays the revered Dr. Fei-Hong like a town bumpkin, and it doesn't help that he's apparently at least as old as his dad, and a decade or more older than his mother.
Sorry, but Chan wins his fights in this film by wearing out his opponents, like Bugs Bunny in "Gorilla My Dreams". Amazing they were, but heroic? Nah.
Any attempt by this film to make the audience aware of the evils of drinking is ruined by the father's willingness to beat his drunken son half to death to get his point across. So much for the wise, compassionate father, and no wonder the abused son would take up this form of Chinese martial art.
