06/17/01: I Liked Liar Liar

I liked the movie Liar Liar. It was both heartwarming and screamingly hilarious. You do not have to like the zany, madcap, farcical humor of the Ace Ventura movies or be a Jim Carrey fan and think he's a comic genius to enjoy this film. It is Carrey's most well-rounded performance to date. Anyone who can watch the boardroom scene and the final courtroom scene where he badgers his own witness without guffawing needs to stop watching movies called "comedies". They are wasting their time.

That the film pulls this off is all the more impressive given its over-the-top, implausible premise--that someone can be made to cease lying for 24 hours. We willingly suspend disbelief because the storyline and characters are so deftly developed.

And here's a news flash--this film is not about the character of the boyfriend Jerry. Why he is in the forefront of people's minds and why "Mr. Cranky" has such a soft spot in his heart for him and thinks he is the central character in the picture is beyond me. He is a saccharine, sappy puppy who looks more like he should be heading off to a Boston prep school than to be a Boston hospital administrator. This film is about a father's responsibility to his son, and about forgiveness. Maura Tierney is delicious as Fletcher's ex, too. Nice bonus.
