I wanted to like this movie, but I didn't. It just made the little "game" the father played with his son to shield him from the horrible realities of the death camp look entirely too easy to pull off. Such a place would have been impossible to explain away with pretty stories, and the boy would, inevitably, have witnessed atrocities from which his father couldn't possibly have shielded him. I went into the theater expecting to love this movie because so many people had told me I would, but on balance I just found it offensive. To me, it was just one notch above a musical about the Holocaust.
