This just a sketch of the basic King Lear story. I tend to read waaay too much into this but if you skip everything before the *'s, you should get the basic plot line.
In good times (signified by a happy face) King Lear had three daughters (signified by the two eyes and the nose.) **Note that all daughters are roughly the same size.

When times aren't so good (signified by a straight face) Only two of King Lear's daughters (an eye and a nose) stayed by his side. **Note that the remaining daughters are still roughly the same size even though Smiley King Lear no longer has bipolar vision and so isn't seeing what's really going on -- he thinks princess one eye gives a true vision, but he's missing the picture. (she has no depth!!!)

When times are really crummy, (signified by a sad face) Only King Lear's third daughter stays with him. **Note that it's the nose; by this time in the play, King Lear has been blinded.
