07/03/02: I cried at the end, Madhatter

Posted By: Becky_Sharp

Those bittersweet endings get me every damn time. I felt hopeful, though, that Will and Lyra would see each other again. (That trick of the angels'.) The ultimate message, that heaven is where you make it and it's more important to be good people while on earth than to prepare all one's life for a divine reward, was less heretical than I would have thought, considering that they pretty much killed the Authority. I can't even begin to speculate what happens now. If Lyra was Eve, and she wanted something so badly (Will) yet didn't take it, that means she didn't fall, right? And if there was no Fall, there is no Sin. No Sin=Paradise, right? So Eve and her Adam will build Paradise, albeit in different worlds.

Final verdict: For children/YA books, they're pretty challenging. Heck, they're more challenging than some of the "adult" books I've read! Some parts dragged and seemed unnecessary, especially in the 3rd book: i.e. the part about Lyra's hair and the bomb seemed stuck in purely to showcase Mrs. Coulter's dual nature. However, I enjoyed the books mightily and I will pay them the ultimate compliment and buy them in hardback. : )
