Wayl, you puzzle me, Parca. I really do see the buildups and the climaxes in his movies, and they tend to mean a lot to me. The possibility of redemption, the real meaning of justice in a complicated situation, finding love when the prospects had seemed bleak...those climaxes grabbed me.
As far as Lone Star goes, we don't know that the town has a *large* African-American population, we just know that it has enough of one to keep a good bar thriving.
And most of the "side issues" in Lone Star relate to when old history and when it's worth bringing it up. You know, the backstory. For me at least it all fit together.
...I can't believe I only just looked at this, but I went to the John Sayles interview and read his actual intentions for Lone Star (it's at the bottom of the page). Check that out and see if that answers your dissatisfactions with the movie.
