p.s. I agree that the movie would prove frustrating to someone who prefers films strongly driven by plot. That's what the big Hollywood film factory is for- it responds to a market. Being more interested in characters, human psychology and acting, I enjoyed the film's meandering and its movement back and forth in time. Yes, it may be harder to tell your friends "what happens in the movie", but I found the characters and the theme (relation between individuals, community, history) stayed in my mind. I like movies that make me think, that I can discuss in some depth with others (straight narrative doesn't satisfy my need for exploration and discovery in art). P.S. Yes, it had flaws (at times Peyton Place with a twang), but some interesting characters and conflicts. Music was great!
