Sayles spends all this time (134 minutes)ruminating about history and how it affects people's lives. We've got to put up with endless probing and some really stagey dialog about perspectives on U.S. treatment of Indians, chicanos, and blacks, but when it comes down to it, the movie seems to be saying, history doesn't really matter.
