I loved this movie, and was disappointed that it didn't get the kudos from the Academy it deserved. Some of the strikes against it (1) it came out too early in the year, and the Oscar buzz has subsided (2) no real campaigning for it when the Oscar nomination season began (this is what kept Fargo, another early release, from being overlooked, I think). It's a shame, really - that you have to beat Academy members over the head with something to make them see it - you would hope you could rely on their memory of a great movie.
And while I was thrilled for Joel and Ethan Coen, I was really hoping for that screenplay award to go to "Lone Star". Maybe someday, Sayles will get his due.
