"Lone Star" is the best 1996 movie I've seen. In fact, it is like no other movie I have ever seen. There have been murder mysteries, sure; slice-of-life movies, of course; and lots of boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy regains girl stories. "Lone Star" contains all these elements, yet director John Sayles has woven those elements -- and others -- together so artfully, you will leave the theater thinking you've seen a brand-new experience in filmmaking. And you may just be right.
There are surprises in the plot that I won't reveal here. Let's just mention that Sayles' use of "flashback" techniques is innovative and very stylish. The story flashes back and forth between the past and the present seamlessly, as if time and space were all part of the same plane... as, of course, they are.
"Lone Star" is a misnomer. It rates FOUR stars!
