07/28/01: Ooooohhh, the assassin news photographer lurking in the shadows!!

Posted By: einstein

As soon as I saw the opening credits sequence to Mad City, I knew right away that it was not only a journalist-bashing movie, but a journalist-bashing movie made by people who don't have the slightest fucking clue what the profession of journalism is like.

Ever see one of those action or spy thrillers, where there's an evil assassin lurking in the shadows getting ready make a hit? You see a sequence of closeups that are supposed to be scary, of a pair of hands taking a high powered rifle out of a case, and slowly assembling it piece- by-piece, and loading it, etc.

Take that movie cliche, and change the high powered rifle to a broadcast Betacam and a Lectosonics wireless microphone, being put together piece-by-piece by a pair of hands, and you have an incredibly stupid opening to an incredibly stupid movie.

In case you haven't guessed, I'm a TV news photographer. When I come in to work to do my job in the morning, trust me, my equipment is already intact and ready to go. We don't take stuff apart when we go home at night. Duh!

Besides, I wish that for once, just once, someone would make a movie that shows a news crew actually asking someone's prior permission off camera to interview them, maybe even making a phone call ahead of time to set up the interview. Contrary to what you see in the movies, ambush interviews only make up about 5% of all the work I've ever done over the past 12 years in this biz.
