11/13/00: Madeline: My review

Posted By: power_critic

There's more to entertaining children than shoving movies like Madeline down their throats.

The movie is about a young schoolgirl in Paris named Madeline . . . and that's about it.

Where's there's supposed to be storyline, we see Madeline and her friends visiting the park. We see Madeline and her friends studying in school. We see Madeline and her friends brushing their teeth. We see Madeline and her friends going to bed. We see Madeline and her friends sitting down and having supper.

Somewhere in all of this, we find out Madeline is the only one who doesn't have a family. The school is being sold to rich aristocrats by the house owner, Nigel Hawthorne. The nun, Frances McDormand is allergic to the dog that rescues Madeline when she falls into a river. And there is a plot to kidnap the next door neighbor's kid, the son of a Spanish ambassador. However, his accent was so flat, that there were times I thought that he must have studied under the same voice coach as Leonardo DiCaprio from The Man In the Iron Mask.

This is one of those kid's films that thinks kids will watch it just because it has children in it. But kids nowdays want to see blood, guts, gore, and guns. Not schoolgirls acting like proper young ladies.

p.c.
