08/05/1998: JANE AUSTEN'S MAFIA 2: SENSELESS AND INSENSIBLE

In this dazzling, laugh-filled sequel, the protagonists are two driveling imbeciles, Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful (as themselves). They blunder into a real war between two factions of Mafiosi, and their adorable hijinks and totally inept approach to the situation in which they're mired evoke massive hilarity from the audience.

In a dramatic and startling turnabout, the continued buffoonery of Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful causes the two factions to realize that, whatever their differences over turf and competition, they have a common bond -- the possession of functioning brains -- that Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful sadly lack. They therefore get in touch with Janet Reno (playing herself) and secure presidential pardons for all their previous offenses if they can manage to dispose of Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful. (Key to this development is the intervention of Al Gore, playing himself, who regards the elimination of our two protagonists as essential to the success of his Education 2000 initiative.)

In the movie's never-to-be-forgotten climax, the curvaceous female members of both factions dress in skimpy costumes and lure Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful to the garage in Chicago that was the setting of the now-notorious Saint Valentine's Day Massacre. Our two protagonists, heedless of every historical marker and sign telegraphing their eventual and inevitable destruction, make their way into the garage, slavering uncontrollably at the sight of the women who are their lust goddesses. At a signal from the leaders of the former clashing factions, the two women run away, giggling merrilly. As Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful exchange semiliterate grunts of mutual reproof, they are caught in headlights from a massed array of dark sedans. As they freeze, startled and confused, every member of both factions unleashes a fusilade of machine-gun fire, pinning our protagonists to the walls. The cast and the audience laugh and applaud as Simon the Great's and Mr. Wonderful's bodies jerk and twitch with the impact of each round, and in a cut to slow-motion we see the blood fountain forth. At a signal from the leaders, the sound of weapons cuts off, and Simon the Great and Mr. Wonderful slowly slide to the ground.

The camera lingers on them as the cast sings a celebratory aria from the opera of your choice.

Music up and fadeout.
