The sound that you hear when the cop enters is the body falling. The cop was responding to a disturbance call, so one assumes the man and the woman (if not also the little boy) were having a little DISAGREEMENT. At that juncture, the little boy blows the guy away.
Now, I am not sure that it's the little boy later on that shoots at the cop. That was not clear. If anything, the cop is feeling protective of Claudia while he's driving away from her place. So, because he didn't believe her that she "had a boyfriend," when he sees some guy go running toward her place, he assumes it's the evil and identified boyfriend. That's why he turns around. That whole scene built up for the sole purpose of his losing his gun. (Ah, he can spill his guts to Claudia when she's trying to tell him she's a major cokehead and her father raped her.) Pitiful.
OK, but here's what I didn't get from that whole movie: what was all that shit about Donnie Whiz Kid being gay? That made no sense at all. So, he wants to get braces so he can win over the bartender, but what was the connection with the familiy? Or with his being a whiz kid? Was it a pun (whizzing?) or was it to say that the only ones with brains are gay? I like the latter, not the former interpretation.
