The frogs were certainly had religious connotations. It was foreshadowed as mentioned in a previous post. But that wasn't the only thing...
Cranky mentioned how unlikable the characters were. This was extremly significant. The prologue and the epologue asked the question - are there coincidences, or di things happen for a reason? So why did the frogs fall. Perhaps it was a plauge from God because of all the sin of these characters. Perhaps it was just something that happens. the kid knew it was going to happen. The wierd really does happen from time to time. This film is trying to answer why.

PS Another major religious reference was the little boys rap. It talked about how he was the profit(spell?) and how the "worm" was the killer of society. It also mentioned something about God punishing, or something like that. I can't really remember.
