Because it's always made be people arguing against me, but Shakespeare was very popular in his day, as were the great Greek Tragedians and the Augustan poets (both of the Enlightenment and ancient Rome) and however many others. Anyway, I still agree that in general movies are *not* art, though I think some perhaps are, and that because of the variety of media organically welded together film has the *potential* to be the most highly wrought and impactful artform yet. Of course, we could get into the whole what is art discussion, but that's just too damn hard and I can't take the time (the time it would take is a lifetime).
