12/13/02: I'll release a preliminary top 10 list next Friday

After I see "Rabbit Proof Fence," "Roger Dodger" and "Catch Me If You Can." I'll still lack "The Hours" (I can't believe I missed that screening), "The Pianist," "The Quiet American" and possibly "Antwone Fisher" and "Chicago" (conflicting screenings on those last two), but frankly I tend to doubt any of those would make my top 10 -- except for "The Pianist." My #1 is going to be a big surprise. Even to me at this point! Yup, it's that kind of year. But anyway, Morrison, I realize that every year has a lot of bad movies, but quantitatively, it's the worst year for me and most other critics without a doubt -- my average is probably going to be below 5, and I even skipped some guaranteed failures like "Halloween Ressurection" and "Country Bears" (the one movie of the year you couldn't have pulled me into kicking and screaming). And to have six zeroes in one year when I had less than that in the three previous years combined really says something. Furthermore, I still haven't given any fiction film higher than an 8, while last year there was a 10 and a couple of 9's by this point. In 2000, I issued five 10s (I actually attempted to issue an 11, but my editor would have none of that). So I still say this is just about the worst year, even ignoring the fact that I've seen a lot movies you haven't seen.

And sorry about leaving off the "2" on "Blair Witch 2" -- lost my train of thought there for a second.
