Sometimes I may say something like "Movies just keep getting worse and worse," but I don't really mean it. I really do evaluate each year rather carefully and sometimes year 9 is better than year 10 and sometimes year 11 is better than year 9 -- every year can be up and down, quality-wise. As I said, I gave out a chunk of 9s and 10s in 2000, which was right after 1999, a year in which I gave out only a pair of 10s -- so at least my top 10 of 2000 was better than my top ten of 1999 (strangely, my #1 movie of 1999 was a 9, not a 10 -- go figure). Then in 1998 I gave out a multitude of 10s, making it far better than 1997. So just because I say 2002 sucks doesn't mean that it's a trend. But I'd have trouble coming up with a better year than 1995, which had about half of the movies that were in my top ten of the 90s (for the record, if somebody has forgotten or never knew: "Braveheart," "Seven," "The Usual Suspects," and "Toy Story" were among that bunch). Years like that don't come along very often. Then on the other side, you have 2002. I suppose the best evaluation of a year actually is doing something like a best of the 90s list and seeing how many of a single year end up in the top section or so. Obviously, it's a little early in the 2000s to be doing that, but if I did do that, I don't think a single movie from 2002 would be in my top 10...
