..found it at Blockbuster used for 4 bucks.. Since it costs close to 7 to actually rent a movie, now, i figured i may as well just own the thing..
Actually, 'twas much more entertaining then i was expecting it to be..
It was definitely a by-the-numbers action-adventure movie, but there were some subtle touches that really brought the picture together and made it work.. I'm convinced that alot of the cliches were actually meant as TRIBUTES to other films that had come before it (which, in that case, film buffs might actually get a kick outta this flick).. Scene that got me along this line of thinking was the one where "The Rock" did his best impression of Harrison Ford at the beginning of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom"..There were others that seemed to kinda confirm this, but unfortunately, i just can't think of 'em right now..
As far as The Rock's acting goes: He's good at cutting promos in wrestling, thus action-movie style one-liners would obviously come naturally.. and he's definitely an imposing physical presence on screen..
Still, i don't think we'll be seeing Rocky in anything much better then this..Definitely won't be acting alongside Johnny Depp or Sean Penn anytime soon... That's for sure..He was better then expected. Then again, i'm used to "Santa with Muscles" and "Suburban Commando", when it comes to wrestlers in movies..
If you're at the videostore someday lookin' for some mindless B-movie fun, i'd say this one's worth a look.. It does have some pretty neat action sequences..
Interesting sidenote: It struck me that, of all the wrestlers who have gone to the movies, probably the guy who has had the highest quality stuff is Rowdy Roddy Piper!
"They Live" and "Hell Comes to Frogtown" are definite uber-classics in the sci-fi b-movie genre..
