03/31/00: Cycle Of The Wolf, Chapter 11: Bankruptcy(not really, but it sounded funny)

Wulfgar's internal log:

We settled onto the chairs and couch on the opposite side of the room. The princess was somewhat distracted; She pulled a book out of her coat pocket and began reading. It was "The Prince" by Machiavelli

"Typical" I thought, and turned to Lady Eboshi.

"So, Lady, how is it a fighter comes tae serve a pacifist techno-cult leader?"

She frowned, steepling her hands; The frown revealed minute scars, hidden in the "Smile lines" and hairline. Cuts and burns, by the look...but you would have to be a doctor or...a soldier who's seen too many types of damage for his own good.

"This one was a scientist, a researcher- My father had trained this one himself. He was a good, ethical man; he discovered that his employers were not. He'd developed an artificial intelligence device, he thought as a diagnostic tool. But they wished to utilize it as a weapon."

She paused, and a look of ancient hurts passee across her features.

"He opposed their wishes. The head of the company had him killed."

"This One had nothing to do but to carry on his work and to bring down his killer. This One her younger brother gathered a team to help them. After several years of this sort of life, This One was injured in a laboratory accident- an explosion. This One suffered electrical and chemical burns, cuts from shattered circuitry and glassware. One of This One's comrades knew of Master Timleary's nigh-miraculous techniques for healing physical and mental wounds. After surgery and therapy proved to be of limited help, This One sought out Master Timleary and sought his help."

She paused.

"This One found peace within his philosophy, and his therapeutic methods gave her healing that soothed her hurts."

She fell silent, then. I had much to consider.

"Yer Da taught ye tae fight like tha'? If he were a man o'peace as ye say, I'd hardly think-"

"That was your most endearing trait, that first time that This One met you, Lord Wulfgar," She actually-giggled-at that, "Do you still have the scar shaped like Italy on your..."

"Aw right" I broke in, "Tha's enouw o'THA"; I'm th' one what makes improper references tae the anatomy an' Sex-lives of others, Lady. I dinnae care fer someone tae be poachin on muh property that' way."

"You did not like it them, either, My Lord..."

‘Who is this woman?' I asked myself.

Only time might tell...

(to be continued...)
