It was not that bad! Not that bad! NOT that BAD! (puke, gag, puke). Why is it that so many people love performance art? Is it just inherent bad taste, or are we all pawns in an alien conspiracy to rid humans of intelligence? Ronald Reagan was one of the alien leaders .... hmmm ... but at least he didn't do performance art. That's how bad it is: Bedtime for Bonzo is better. I was a little disappointed in Mr. Cranky's review of this excuse for a film. Seems he could have found alot more to criticize. As a musician I have the specially reserved (for musicians) reasons for hating almost all schtick. How many laypeople have watched Rip Torn perform the same stupid clown routine 5 shows, 6 nights a week for months on end? This is the tip of the iceberg for musicians who have had to work shows. They say you get used to hearing the same joke repeated ... yeah, right. Look at me, I can't even write without it sounding like a standup act. But being thus jaded, you'd think that I would have liked Kaufman. Only somehow I managed to retain enough consciousness to realize that the performance art trend did little for crap entertainment but widen its appeal (demographic) to an even lower denominator of intelligence (lack of) than it already was. Funny thing though, as a performer of music I understand where its real (only) value lies. That is, in being the performer of it. All those people scratching their heads in annoyance to Kaufman's pranks, those are the intelligent people of the world. The rest are the fools. All performance art, including comedic etc., is a lot like Rock music in that you don't have to have much talent to be good. In fact, you're chances of success in the Rock music business are better the less musical ability and study you have. Because it's the personality that counts. This is why I hate most dramatic entertainment unless it reaches a level of quality that equals the finesse and intelligence it takes to be a truly capable and talented musician, which I am. Call me an elitist, I won't mind. I can afford it, and back it up. That's why I'm a member of Mr. Cranky's club.
