Mansfield Park is a romantic comedy set in the Victorian age of England. Since it is filled with proper respectable humor, many people may not understand or enjoy it.
A young girl (Frances O'Conner) in her mid teens moves away from her poor family and becomes a maid for family of higher standing. She realizes she is an outcast, but is made at home by the youngest son (Jonny Lee Miller). As the years pass along, Miller spends much of his time listening to O'Conner as she tells humorous stories about the history of England.
Trouble comes along as two new guests (Alessandro Nivola, and Embeth Davidtz) arrive. Nivola quickly developes feelings for O'Conner and asks for her hand in marriage. She refuses, now convinced she is love with Miller. However, Miller has set his eyes for Davidtz. O'Conner finally returns back to her original family, a rage of emotions. She very well could marry Nivola, and live in wealth. But O'Conner knows she wouldn't be happy. And yet, she nor Miller can admit their feelings of love for one another.
Mansfield Park is a beautifully well put together period piece depicting England's time of elegance. The costumes and set designs are marvelous. The acting and drama are good too. This movie is about equal in every way to another Jane Austin classic, Emma starring Gweneth Paltrow. Still, Victorian period movies are more meant to please critics than regular viewers. So I wouldn't recommend this to just anyone unless you were a fan of them.
