11/08/01: I wonder if the Coen bros. feel a little embarassed...

about "The Big Lebowski". What a letdown...

Especially coming after the big "Fargo" high they were undoubtably coasting on.

I remember vacationing in California with my boyfriend and he wanted to rent it so we did. As we drove home from the video store he began talking at length about how the Coen bros. were gods among directors and began reciting memorable lines from "Fargo" and "Miller's Crossing".

"They directed 'Miller's Crossing'?" I said.

"Yes." He replied.

At that point I was expecting something really remarkable from that video tape. Imagine my surprise to see it was nothing more than an endless stream of profanities and mugging as the Coen bros. attempted to do what every director was doing after 1995: imitate the Tarantino style of laying on multiple plot lines.

I don't recall laughing even once during the entire film although my boyfriend thought everything coming out of the Dude's mouth was pure comedy gold.

At least they redeemed themselves with "O brother".
