Big Lebowski is an oddball fave of mine, as it is for a lot of other people I know. Yeah, its whacked out, but there's nothing wrong with that. With that one, I get the idea that they had gotten all sorts of mainstream acclaim for Fargo, and they wanted to do something completely out of left field, something that wouldn't get Oscar noms but would be liked by at least some of their long-time fans...
