Oprah plays a New York City therapist. One of her clients is a harried housewife played by Demi Moore who has an abusive cheating husband played by Harvey Keitel. One day, he beats her beyond recognition. She retaliates by cutting off a certain body part (full nude scene for Harvey) while he sleeps feeding it to the family dog. Harvey wakes up, gets dressed not noticing something's missing... doesn't even notice his blood splattered all over the bed sheets. Hey, what can I say? The guy's a loser.
At work, Harvey meets his new secretary (Jenny McCarthy trying to become a serious dramatic actress here). His old one was pushed out of a window... around the same time his higher ups began to keep a close eye on how he treated his female co-workers and stuff (they found nothing wrong with the way he treated them or pointed out pubic hairs in his Coke). He seduces the secretary in his office. She gets down on her knees and unzips his fly... screams in terror! She runs out of the room freaking out. Harvey is furious & has Demi arrested.
In jail, Demi tries to slit her wrists. Her life is saved by a streetsmart inmate (Queen Latifa) who consoles her. The two fall inlove... until Queen's pimp comes to bail her out. She and Demi must then go their separate ways. A few days later, Demi sees a story on the news about a prostitute's disappearance and how pieces of her have been found in dumpsters throughout the City. Queen!
Demi is finally released. She goes home to her mother (played by Gena Rowlands) in the midwest and gets a job at a topless bar where she is grabbed by drunken fratboys and beer-bellied rednecks. One night, the crowd gets out of control and assaults her. Demi runs out into the street naked and ashamed. She stumbles upon a church and runs inside where she meets a priest. Will he take advantage of her? No. He's gay and played by Rupert Everette. Nice to see they don't type-cast him all too much in Hollywood, isn't it?
He hires Demi as the maid at the rectory. A few months later, she finds out she's pregnant but Father Rupert says she doesn't have to leave. She's glad. She studies the Bible with him and finds herself. Slowly, they have a closer relationship than she could ever imagine herself having with a man. She suffers a devastating miscarriage. Shortly after, Harvey shows up swearing he's a changed man. He knows he was wrong & he wants Demi back. Demi throws him out.
Months pass by. Demi is watching the news... there's Harvey atop the Brooklyn Bridge threatening to jump to his death! Father Rupert reminds Demi of the importance of forgiveness and giving people a second chance. She rushes back to New York to stop him. She agrees to move back in with him. They move in together & adopt a Korean orphan. A few years later, everything seems fine. They've adopted eleven children all from different nationalities and now live on a big farm in the country. They spend their evenings singing around a piano. But she can't help but feel that something seems to be missing.
Demi recieves word Father Rupert is in the hospital dying. He has AIDS. She rushes to be by his side. We now meet the secret lover (Neil Patrick Harris) he's had for years... another priest at the rectory. Father Rupert dies, and Demi agrees to temporarilly move back to the rectory as a maid to look after Father Niel... who turns out to be bisexual and attracted to her. God, he reminds her so much of Father Rupert who she realizes she must have been in love with all those years. She reminds Father Niel of him too. They're about to celebrate the moments of their lives when Demi receives a call that one of her children has been hit by a car and killed. She rushes back home realizing where her place is.
After the child's funeral, Harvey confesses on the front porch that while Demi was away, he met someone else! First, she threatens to take the children, and he'll never see them again. He cries... no, weeps. She breaks down. They look at the open land all around them. They will build a house for him and his new love. The house is finished. All are happy.
Night. Demi and Harvey have a bunch of friends over for a housewarming party... and to celebrate their peaceful divorce. They are still friends and a complete family. Who should show up but Father Niel. He's left the priesthood & proposes to Demi. But she doesn't want to marry again. They do decide that he will move in with her though for as long as he and she want. They do love each other.
It's many Christmases later, and we see elderly Demi, Niel, Harvey, and Harvey's new twenty year old wife standing on the front porch of Demi's house greeting all thirty-five of their grandchildren! We see the huge living room with the whole family sitting around singing "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing!" The end.
The credits roll as we hear Cher's "If I Could Turn Back Time".
