When I first saw the previews for this movie several months ago, I knew that this was the one "not to be missed" film of the summer. It looked like it was packed full of action, humor, and romance; thankfully, the producers followed through on their teasers. "The Mask of Zorro" is indeed a fun, thrilling adventure film for everyone.
The most striking aspect of "Zorro" is the exquisite sword play. I was breathless during the multitude of duels. I don't know what it is, but there's just something about watching a sword fight between two (or more) skilled individuals that completely enthralls me, and I wasn't disappointed with this movie.
And I'm happy to see that Antonio Banderas has finally come into his own as an actor. I haven't been impressed with him, and I certainly didn't understand his sex appeal, but I think I've finally got it now. The way he looked at Catherine Zeta-Jones was sizzling, and it was enough to stir the blood of almost anyone watching. Hopkins was fabulous as well, but then I wouldn't expect anything less.
I was further impressed by the music in "Zorro". There was a time when James Horner couldn't compose a single new score; if you listen carefully to "Star Trek II", "Aliens", and "Krull" you'll hear what I'm talking about. However, with the success of his score in "Braveheart", he finally broke out of the mold. This trend continued in "Titanic", and it looks like his repetitive tendencies are finally gone for good with "Zorro". It's simple and understated when necessary and is agressive and compelling during the action sequences thus further drawing the audience into the movie.
All in all, I thought this movie more than lived up to its pre-release hype. I've always been a sucker for the swashbuckler type of movie, from Errol Flynn to Tyrone Powers, and this movie--and Antonio Banderas--makes a good addition to their ranks.
