My mistake. Apparently in 1853 a Captain Love really did behead a bandit named Murrieta and put his head in a jar as a ghoulish keepsake. They wove some real history into this retelling of Zorro, although the beheading took place thirteen or so years after Banderas' Zorro put on the mask.
