11/20/03: Seemingly the bigger question is...

whether any animated picture will ever again be nominated for best picture after creation of this category? "Nemo" is #1 at the box office & the best reviewed film of the year. Each potential Oscar contender, meanwhile, continues to disappoint. "The Missing" is at 4 resh & 5 rotten reviews, so I doubt it will be a contender. Early buzz on "Last Samurai" & "Cold Mountain" is that they are good but not Oscar-calibur (although I still think Miramax lobbies enough for a nomination). Everything about "M & C" screams a solid triple that doesn't quite have the box office clout or heart to be Oscar-calibur.

The only exceptions seem to be "Big Fish" & "House of Shadow & Fog." The buzz for these continues to grow. Still, will "House" be big enough & will the Academy recognize Burton's idiosyncratic vision?

I predict that if "Nemo" isn't nominated this year, no animated film will ever be nominated in the future.
