Last year, the first Lord of the Rings movie showed that it was possible to make a really good movie out of the fantasy genre; unfortuately, the year before the first (and probably last) Dungeons & Dragons movie showed exactly why the fantasy genre was much maligned in movies for many years. The acting, writing, and directing ranged from mediocre to downright hideous, a lot of the FX looked really fakey, and the whole thing seemed like a bizarre mix of Tolkien and Xena (without the majesty of Tolkien or the campy humor of Xena). There are a few funny moments and some "so bad they're good" sequences, but this really isn't a movie worth seeking out.

PS - I don't know a hell of a lot about D&D, but is the movie anything at all like the game?
