While it may seem that your world is falling apart like a term paper built out of post-it notes, I find the situation very humorous. I don't mean to sound like an a--hole, but it just seems funny. The irony is almost dramatic. He wants your love and attention so much but doesn't have the moral courage to do anything about it, so when it falls into his lap like a million dollar check from GOD he can't cash it! Heehee
On the plus side you seem to be a pretty smart cookie. You were able to pick up on all the sublte hints that he liked you (or you beat it out of one of his friends, both being excellent choices) and you saw through his lies to realize that he is coward (uh...sorry, I didn't mean that to sound so insulting since I guess you like this guy.) Point being you make it out of this better off.
