05/25/03: yes, it was crap but...

did you really expect anything else? The first one was a good movie, it was entertaining, had good fight scenes etc. However, was it deep? No. Was it a clever amalgamation of "The Allegory of the Cave", Buddhism and William Gibson, with a dash of Philip K. Dick? Yes. Was I happy they managed to put philosophy in cyberpunk trappings and add kung fu? Hell yes, because I think more people need to learn how to think, and they sure as hell aren't going to read. But was it profound? No. It was only profound if you weren't exposed to the ideas it was based on. The only thing that really pisses me off is they don't thank William Gibson, even though both the original and reloaded are so derivative it borders on plagiarism. Get over it. Have fun. Enjoy it for what it is: Plato for the MTV generation. Will it all end with the postmodern ubermensh transcending his own nihilism? Just you wait. I am a pretentious asshole? Hell yes.
