"Thanks for writing the truth about this stinker", says one post. Have any of you guys even seen the one bomb next to the review? Do you even understand how this website works? Mr. Cranky will bitch and moan no matter what, but he gave it the highest possible rating. And he's right to do so.
Sure many people were disappointed in the movie. We all had high expectations. But for me personally, The Matrix Reloaded was not better or worse than the original - simply different. The way Aliens was different from the original Alien. The way the second LOTR film was different from the first one. And so on. Sure there are some scenes I would've edited or deleted if I were filming it. But on the whole, I came out of the theater feeling throroughly satisfied.
What gets me is not that people disliked the film. It's THE REASONS behind their disliking it.
First of all, I dare someone to name one sci-fi/fantasy movie, book, anything at all that is perfect. ONE. There is no such thing! People tend to demand more from this genre because they still can't get it through their thick skulls that the genre is about one thing: escapism. And bith Matrix movies stand WAY above all the crap that's out there right now. Perfect? No. Could've been better? Yes. "Totally disappointing"? Hell no.
Second, I can't comprehend how anyone could not "get" it (and I'm referring to both Matrix and Matrix Reloaded). Have we been so dumbened that all we can understand is "Charlie's Angels"??? There was absolutely no effort involved for me to understand both movies. You can speculate about the POSSIBILITIES all you want, but the basic idea behind the movies is a pretty damn simple concept... unless you're over 80 y.o., or a retard, or completely braindead.
Third, let's be consistant here, people. I'm not surprised that many were disappointed in this movie, but what I don't understand is how can anyone say that the philosophy behind "Matrix" is mumbo-jumbo and nothing profound, and then turn right around and bring up examples of what they consider "deep" - i.e. William Gibson, Space Odyssey, Ghost in the Shell and so on. I'm not saying they're not deep, but there's ABSOLUTELY NO difference between the amount of depth in all those things, and the Matrix. If you think the Matrix is philosophical mumbo-jumbo then you should think the exact same thing about all those aforementioned examples.
Someone said that "it didn't need a sequel". Do your homework! THE MATRIX WAS CONCEIVED AS A TRILOGY. They did not film the first movie, saw that it was making them a shitload of dough, and said, "whoa, let's write up something new, quick!" The stories were written, developed and imagined before the first Matrix even came out.
And finally, ditto to whomever said that without films like this the world would be boring. I do not work 50 freaking hours a week to go to the movies and see pseudo- intellectual piece of shit *art* films. I go to the movies to have fun. This movie was fun, it was stylish, and it offered something to think about as well. Not a bad deal, thank you very much.
Oh, and do call me when you make a movie 1/10 this good.
