For me, Gandalf taking Saruman out is the necessary arc after the scene where Saruman beats him in the first film. You can't just leave the Saruman character hanging out there w/out ANY resolution in the final film. The whole thing seems to be a cost benefit analysis to me. The issue is a 7 minute scene at the very beginning of the movie. Do you leave it in, risking what? People are bored by the movie b/c of 7 extra minutes? People feel you're going back to TT rather than starting ROTK. Really, there's not much harm done by leaving it in. What do you get by taking it out? Christopher Lee is pissed. LOTR geeks are pissed and WILL be pissed when they see it. People who just like the movies will have no idea what happened to Saruman after Helm's. This is just a bizzare choice by PJ.
