I know that there is a prequel to "Pitch Black" in the works. I think that can avoid some of the problems you mentioned. I mean, we know that Riddick will survive & get those cool eyes in the process, but we basically don't know his prior conflicts or how they are resolved. This makes the preuqel rather open ended & I think it can work if it sticks to the factors that made the 1st one good.
I think a prequel to "Dark City" would work even though its more close ended. I think that the universe established in that movie is so interesting that I would be fascinated by the back story on the strangers & on the lives of those who are put in the city, especially Murdoch. Of course, the first "Dark City" did nothing at the box office, so I'm sure there's no demand.
