The Back to the Future movies were basically all prequels/sequels in one. Doc obviously meets Marty sometime in the late 70s/early 80s but he's already met him in 1955. Then they go to 2015 (gosh, not too far away now is it?) and see everyone in the future, and of course to 1885 and the past. I would say that format worked...
