I remember in the trailer that they briefly show an (Indian?) woman smiling. I had assumed that this would be Russell Crowe's love interest in the movie & that it would be a stupid & forced relationship. I'm sure that was put in to reach the female demographic. I'm glad it was a red herring. As for the opening weekend, I just don't know. The books have a huge following, but I haven't heard of anyone who was excited by the previews. I'm really surprised that, based on your description, they didn't promote this as an action film.
