From what I remember, Crowe was approached about doing a tv show based on "Singles" by NBC. He declined, and basically they still decided to model "Friends" off of the movie. I think at one point, when they were developing the show, they still had the name "Singles" attached to it or something, and Crowe got pissed, maybe even suing. I'm not sure if there was ever a settlement, though. But, yeah, "Friends" is to "Singles" what "Arrested Development" is to "The Royal Tennenbaums" -- an attempt by some really mainstream/lame TV people to try to create a carbon copy of a quirky film.
