04/04/98: Japan and Canada vs. Disney

Posted By: p.c.

Fox and Warner are definitely giving Disney a hard time as far as syndicated television shows are concerned. However, neither Fox or Warner has had a successful movie since when? An American Tale? Batman: Mask of the Phantasm?

Now Japan: We know of the highly successful anime outbreak that occuring across the United States. Strike one to Disney. They combat it with Gargoyals. Gargoyals is successful, but it still must adhere to the Children's Television Act of 1990, making the show suffer to censorship. Strike two to Disney, and any animation company that is making an animated tv show. It can't compete with direct-to-video sales that anime has. Strike three comes from Canada, who is selling their animated material to cable companies like PBS, Nickelodeon, and HBO.

If I was in charge of Disney, I would pick the most obscure and unexpected movie I could find and make it animated. A movie not targeted to young children. A movie that would appeal to a broad range of people (a renegade science fiction, or a swords, socery, and dragons). A movie where villians were truely evil, and good does not always conquere all.
