*sigh*
Yet another person using "Akira" as a film representing anime as a whole. I really hope I don't offend anyone, but "Akira" was a pretty, yet extremely compressed film. It was a two hour film based on a thirty plus manga series, the resulting film being disjointed and disappointing. That's just my personal take on the film, mind you. I'd rather have seen it as a series of films, but that's a little bit too unreasonable...
Another point - Someone said that anime, unlike American cartoons, are not the thralls of Japanese product lines. This, I might argue, is wrong. Most anime TV series are indeed produced in order to sell toys and merchandise. Look at Dragon Ball, EVA (which has made MOST of its money in merchandising) , Tenchi Muyou, Sakura Taisen... the list goes on and on.
