Although I think if the GOP did splinter into a "Fiscal conservative/Socially liberal"*, they'd get a lot of centrists and dems to join. That's what the mainstream is in this country anyway. Then you'd get three parties: the religious fundamentalist/neocon party (aka fascist party), the fundamentalist ultralib/hippydippy party (aka green communist party, aka ELF and PETA), and the much much larger mainstream-reasonable-people party (aka common sense party).
*Yes, I know the libertarians claim to be such a party, but they're not. They're a bunch of Smith-worshipping kooks with a looser grasp on reality than W on an acid trip.
