He's just anti-anti-racist. But he knew how to play the race card for his own interests, with his "high-tech lynching" line. (After he got confirmed, he said something like, "I'm going to be on the court for decades, and if you don't like it, get over it." That's what you call a sore winner.)
A contemporary parallel to the argument that Afro-Americans mustn't be "the special favorites of the law" is today's opposition to "special rights" for homosexuals.
