I happen to have known Frank McCourt, the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for his autobiography, "Angela's Ashes". After reading about that I decided to rent Michael Collins so that I could learn about the events preceding the book. I never knew anything about these events, such as the English ruling Ireland, or opening fire on a soccer crowd, etc.
When I was in elementary school, a teacher told the class about the IRA member Bobby Sands, who was starving himself as protest in Northern Ireland. Admittedly, I don;t know that much about Ireland to start out with, but seeing this movie helps put "Northern Ireland" in a better perspective.
Having seen this movie, I'd like to actually learn more about the history of the country, how they evolved from that point at the end of the film to where they have been for the last edcade or so ( I know a little about that).
One question: Was this a one-sided picture of De Valera or what? I wanted to kick Alan Rickman's ass the entire movie. The whole time I was thinking, who would make this guy president of their country? But then I see Clinton and Monica Lewinsky on CNN and think, oh...well.. OK.
